Kimberley Region

The Kimberley region is located in tropical Northwest Australia and, with an area of 421,451km2, is 1/6 the size of Western Australia. Broome is the largest town in the Kimberley with a permanent population of 15,000 people, and is ideally situated on the beautiful Indian Ocean coastline.

Broome has a colourful history based on the pearling industry and is the producer of the highly sought after South Sea Pearls. Due to its ideal tropical conditions and remote and pristine location, Broome and the Kimberley are ideal areas for aquaculture.

There are 2 seasons in the Kimberley; the dry season extends from April to October with average temperatures below 30 o C, and the wet season extends from November to March with average temperatures below 35 o C.

While the average annual rainfall in the Kimberley is 1400mm, rainfall varies greatly between different areas. The sea and inland waterways of the Kimberley have played an important role in the life and history of its Indigenous people and this enduring bond, together with their proximity to the waterways, has fostered a strong interest and commitment to aquaculture.
